How do you start raising rats?

Selecting Rat Wrangler on the starting scenarios screen begins your run with an animal setup and unlocks the We Have Rats! goal on the Steam achievements list. If you started in another profession, you can add rat ranching later through Joe Wild’s network.

Rats need more daily work than aquafarming. A colony multiplies quickly, so feeding, cleaning and cage repairs belong in the closing routine.

What keeps an Animal Cage productive?

A working colony depends on four daily checks before you close the shop:

  1. Maintain a breeding pair: Keep at least one adult male and one adult female in the cage so the colony replaces itself without new purchases.
  2. Stock the feed dispenser: Load affordable food, such as hydroponic Nutrifruit or low-cost groceries, so the colony does not starve overnight.
  3. Keep the cage clean and repaired: Overcrowding, waste and cage damage hurt animal condition and can lead to escapes. Check cage durability in your closing routine.
  4. Separate breeders from harvest stock: Mark the breeding pair before you butcher, so the parents are not the ones you slaughter.

How do you turn rats into profit?

Once young rats mature, butcher the surplus adults for raw meat.

The meat has two uses:

  • Food sales: Food buyers at the counter buy raw rat meat.
  • Fish tanks: If you also run aquafarming, check the species before you use rat meat as feed.

Compare feed and cage repairs with the sale price in the money guide. A colony that costs more to feed and repair than the meat brings in will cut into the rent reserve.
